Parent Engagement & Behaviour Policy

Parent Engagement & Behaviour Policy

1. Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to:

  • Encourage respectful, constructive, and positive involvement from parents and guardians.

  • Set clear expectations around parent behaviour at games, training, and club events.

  • Foster a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment for players, coaches, referees, volunteers, and other families.

2. Scope

This policy applies to all parents, carers, and guardians of players registered with the Ocean Grove Breakers Basketball Club, and covers all club-related activities including training, competitions, events, and communications.

3. Policy Statement

Ocean Grove Breakers values the vital role parents play in supporting their children and the club. We commit to working in partnership with families to promote a positive sporting environment. We expect all parents to act in accordance with the Club's Code of Conduct and this policy, treating others with respect and modelling good sportsmanship at all times.

4. Parent Expectations

Parents are expected to:

  • Encourage fair play and positive participation.

  • Show respect for all players, referees, coaches, and volunteers.

  • Allow coaches to coach and refrain from giving conflicting instructions.

  • Never engage in abusive, offensive, or aggressive language or behaviour.

  • Support the emotional and physical wellbeing of all children, not just their own.

  • Address concerns through the correct process — not on the sidelines or in front of players.

  • Promote and support club policies including Child Safe Standards.

5. Club Commitments to Parents

The Club will:

  • Provide clear communication and accessible points of contact for parents.

  • Offer opportunities for parent input and feedback via meetings or surveys.

  • Share information about player development pathways, team selection, and coaching philosophies.

  • Provide an avenue for concerns or complaints to be raised and addressed respectfully and confidentially.

6. Procedures

6.1. Welcome & Induction

  • All parents will be given a copy of this policy at the beginning of each season and asked to sign a Parent Code of Conduct form.

  • Information sessions may be held pre-season to explain expectations, processes, and roles (e.g. team managers, communication channels).

6.2. Communication Protocols

  • Parents are encouraged to use team managers or the designated club contact as their first point of call.

  • Direct contact with coaches should be respectful, outside game times, and follow a 24-hour rule after a game if raising concerns.

6.3. Dealing with Concerns or Breaches

If a parent’s behaviour breaches this policy, the following steps will be taken:

Step

Action

1

Verbal Reminder: Coach or committee member provides a quiet, respectful reminder.

2

Written Warning: A formal warning is issued by the Club President or Welfare Officer.

3

Meeting Requested: The parent is invited to a meeting to discuss the issue and next steps.

4

Sanctions Imposed: May include temporary suspension from attending games or events.

5

Termination of Membership: In serious or repeated cases, the family’s membership may be revoked in accordance with the Club’s grievance and disciplinary procedures.

7. Review

This policy will be reviewed annually by the Club Committee or sooner if required due to changes in legislation, policy, or operational circumstances.
